Game Lab Response

Having played in the game lab today, I think of computer mediated research in a different way. At first I only thought of it as computer mediated research as the type we were discussing on secondlife and textual research, but now I'm thinking of it in terms of real people having actual physical contact in a media equipped room.
It is important to get IRB's done; however I was guilty of not actually reading it when before I signed it, which is a limitation of such a form. I think working with children, I would probably have someone read the form to them as well as have them read it themselves. Humm...that's about all I can think of now, so I'm off to the Video Closet.

  1. Did you love the video closet? I sort of did and want one for the English Dept.
I agree that our time in the Games Lab makes you rethink computer-mediated research. It seems to me know that it has something to do with technology actually impacting the users' life (how they live, learn, communicate, play, interact, etc). In that way, studying a gaming listserv might be computer-mediated research but so could a case study and observation done of gamers playing in the lab. It seems that the positioning of the technology is key to the idea of computer-mediated research.

  2. I have to say that the video closet was a little un-nerving. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love attention. But, looking into a little lens and watching yourself on the mini-screen made me feel a little off-center. LOL!

I really feel that the game lab is such a great example of a real research based environment. It helps you to really think about how research can be conducted. I am definitely a fan :)
